Our Values

Certified B Corporation

Certified B Corporation

B Corporations meet comprehensive social and environmental performance standards. The B Corporation status emphasizes the triple bottom line of social responsibility, sustainability and profitability. What matters to us is the choices we make in terms of the projects we work on, how we treat one another, and the values we apply in our every-day operations.

Giving Back

Giving Back

Every year, we give away at least 2% of our profits to non-profit organizations. The selection is done collaboratively as each member of our team is asked to allocate the contributions we will make. Everyone at at the company has a chance to decide how the donations are allocated.

10% for Learning and Research

10% for Learning and Research

Staff members are encouraged to develop a personal research or a learning program and can spend up to 10% of their time on this. Several research projects have been turned into new software tools, won awards or have enabled us to pursue new business opportunities in domains we had not explored before. In fact, our open source work began as a colleague's 10% time.

Open Source and Open Data

Open Source and Open Data

We believe that communities of knowledge, culture, and innovation are improved when outcomes are shared, enabling others to more effectively build on past work. See our work on GitHub as well as freestanding open source projects: GeoTrellis, OpenTreeMap, DistrictBuilder, and OpenDataPhilly. Through our Summer of Maps fellowship, we support geospatial data analysis projects for nonprofits.

Meet The Team

We are dedicated to creating meaningful impact in the communities we serve. Our team is made up of talented individuals who work together to solve some of the most complex geospatial challenges of our generation. We also spend time volunteering, mentoring others in and outside the office, and hosting and participating in community and educational events.

Azavea is an Esri Business Partner and has more than 15 years of experience with development and deployment on the ArcGIS platform.

Technology We Use

Azavea’s developers work closely with our User Experience (UX) Design team to build user-focused web and mobile applications in a range of languages and frameworks, including Javascript, Python, Scala, and R. We strive for elegant solutions to complex problems to bring about positive change.

Our Data Analytics team helps our clients tell compelling data-driven stories to advance their missions, with tools like CartoDB, Mapbox, and ArcGIS Online. They assist them to make informed decisions using statistics, map algebra, and open-source tools such as GeoDa, R, and QGIS.

Azavea is proud to sponsor and organize GeoPhilly, a community of mapmakers and data enthusiasts. Join us at friendly and educational events that explore the vast possibilities of geography and geospatial technologies every month in Philadelphia.

Upcoming GeoPhilly Events

OpenDataPhilly.org was created in 2011 by Azavea in collaboration with the City of Philadelphia Office of Innovation & Technology, Tech Impact (formerly NPower PA), TechnicallyPhilly, WHYY, and the William Penn Foundation. The data portal aims to provide a hub for publishing and accessing open data created by the City government, NGOs, universities, and businesses in the region.
