Certified B Corporation
To become certified, B Corporations must meet comprehensive and transparent social and environmental performance standards. The B Corporation status emphasizes the triple bottom line of social responsibility, sustainability and profitability. As one of the B Corp 'Best for the Workers' recipients, what matters to us is the choices we make in terms of the projects we work on, how we treat one another, and the values we apply in our every-day operations.
Every year, we give away at least 2% of our profits to non-profit organizations. The selection is done collaboratively as each member of our team is asked to allocate the contributions we will make. Basically, everyone at Azavea has a chance to decide how the donations are allocated.
10% for Learning and Research
Staff members are encouraged to develop a personal research or a learning program, and can spend up to 10% of their time on this. Several research projects have been turned into new software tools, won awards or have enabled us to pursue new business opportunities in domains we had not explored before. In fact, our open source work began as a colleague's 10% time.
Open Source and Open Data
We believe that communities of knowledge, culture and innovation are more vital and energetic when outcomes are shared, enabling others to more effectively build on past work. Check our GitHub account as well as free-standing open source projects: GeoTrellis, OpenTreeMap, DistrictBuilder, and OpenDataPhilly. Through our Summer of Maps fellowship program, we support geospatial data analysis projects for organizations that do not have the resources to do so on their own.
Technology We Use
Our Data Analytics team helps our clients tell compelling data-driven stories to advance their missions, with tools like CartoDB, Mapbox, and ArcGIS Online. They assist them to make informed decisions using statistics, map algebra, and open-source tools such as GeoDa, R, and QGIS.
