Redistricting the Philadelphia Region

The Committee of Seventy is a non-partisan, non-profit organization which fights for clean and effective government, fair elections and an informed citizenry in Philadelphia and the region. Founded in 1904 by a handful of committed civic leaders, today Seventy is a leader on issues of elections, government reform and civic engagement.

As part of their Ethics Agenda introduced during the 2007 Mayoral and City Council elections, Committee of Seventy urged candidates to pledge that — if elected — they would:
Convene a non-partisan and independent citizen’s commission to devise a fair redistricting reform plan that will benefit the citizens of Philadelphia and reduce the conflicts of interest inherent when political district lines are drawn by incumbent elected officials.

Many candidates signed on, including Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and a number of currently serving City Council members. Seventy continues to push for a fair redistricting reform plan.  Redistricting the Philadelphia Region -- the regional site of Redistricting the Nation.com -- aims to inform Philadelphians about redistricting practices, issues, and Committee of Seventy's efforts in pushing a fair redistricting reform.
