David is a developer on the Sandstone team, the Kaleidocade (or KIF) team, an SBIR Map Algebra research project, and the coordinator of Azavea's Monthly R&D Social. He prefers to work on projects that are no less than extraordinary.
David graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he studied remote sensing, machine vision, and image processing. He is a self taught programmer with a passion for solving complex problems with elegant, robust solutions. This trajectory has taken him through the worlds of Java, C, C++, C#, Perl, and Python.
Prior to working at Azavea, David teamed up with scientists to develop a multi-object spectrograph at Pixel Physics in Rochester, NY. He also built customized mission simulations in the Half-Life and Unreal gaming engines in Washington, DC and worked on a team to integrated software control and image processing algorithms in the IVIS 200 Series bioluminescent imaging system at Xenogen Corporation in Alameda, CA.
David is a founding member of the Philadelphia OSGeo Chapter, and a member of the Boston OSGeo community. He is an active member in the maker and mapping community in Cambridge, MA.
As David's independent research projects, he is currently collaborating on Sourcemap.org, a project developed by the MIT Media Lab that aims to make supply chains transparent. Additionally, he is working with the PostGIS project to add support for Map Algebra.
While not engulfed in some technological haberdashery, David can be spotted on his bicycle in and out of town, hiking in New England, or exploring the Maine Coast. Under no circumstances will David eat tapioca pudding.
