There has long been demand for supporting storage of geographic raster data in the PostGIS extension of the PostgreSQL database. A project is under way (PostGIS WKT Raster project) to add support for both storage and use of raster data for analysis, including an implementation of Map Algebra. Azavea staff contributed to the project through the 2010 OSGeo Code Sprint.
