When SunLight Labs held its 2009 Great American Hackathon, Azavea hosted the Philadelphia event in its office in Philadelphia and two members of the staff, David Middlecamp and Robert Cheetham worked on the project. Josh Tauberer, a PhD candidate at the University of Pennsylvania, and developer of GovTrack.us, organized the local event, which encourages groups in each region of the United States to gather together on one weekend and create software that will make government more open. The local team of seven people created a web-based visualization and display tool based on data from the New Jersey Gang Survey 2007. Using Django, MySQL, OpenLayers, OpenStreetMap and ArcGIS Desktop, we put together a complete app in two days. Two analysts from the New Jersey State Police joined us on Saturday, explained the background on the data set and answered questions about the survey data. The result is the New Jersey Gang Survey Viewer. You can read more about the effort in our Labs blog post.
