MAPLight’s website posits that “elected officials collect large sums of money to run their campaigns, and they often pay back campaign contributors with special access and favorable laws. This common practice is contrary to the public interest, yet legal.”  Azavea produced 421 maps for MAPLight’s 'Remote Control' report, which concluded that U.S House members raise 79% of their campaign funds from outside their districts.
