Azavea's applications are written in the Microsoft .NET programming environment. Michael McLarnon’s research project is an attempt to find out if we can get our applications to run on Mono, which is an open-source implementation of the .NET environment. Mono can also be run on an open-source operating system, Linux. The ability to get our applications to run in an all-open-source environment will mean that we will be better able to target clients who are looking for a low-cost solution, for example non-profit organizations.
