About Hunchlab

HunchLab is a web-based geographic crime visualization, early warning and risk forecasting software solution

For police departments and public safety agencies, effectively focusing resources requires timely crime pattern analysis. HunchLab is an automated temporal data-mining application.

On a schedule set by administrative personnel, it sifts through large volumes of your data, provides early detection of crime spikes in geographic regions, and then automatically alerts appropriate staff members to enable preemptive actions and encourage more effective deployment decisions.

Hunchlab also allows users to map crime data, define custom alerts, and create their own intelligence dashboard for ready access to the activity they monitor.

In the same way that businesses forecast market conditions, HunchLab is a next generation policing technology allowing your organization to work proactively.

Achieve Mission Objectives

  • Identify new clusters of precursor crimes, gang activity, or violence.
  • Assist with nationwide Suspicious Activity Alerting and Reporting (SAR).
  • Track use of particular locations as drug “marketplaces.”
  • Confirm or deny presence of an illegal weapons dealer.
  • Confirm or deny presence of dangerous intersection (car accidents).
  • Monitor recently released prisoners for recidivism.
  • Check for the movement of crime activity from one location to another.
  • Monitor the effects of a change in the physical infrastructure of a city, such as a new bar or nightclub.
  • Detect crime clusters that span multiple police district boundaries.
  • Assist in making resource allocation decisions to various geographic areas on the basis of need.
  • Assist with expanding Fusion Center capabilities
  • Create a new generation of policing using forecasting.

How is HunchLab Different From Other
Crime Analysis Systems?

  • Statistical analysis, time, and geographic area are at the core of the system, not just thresholds defined by users.
  • HunchLab’s geographic data mining takes into account historic time periods for comparison, which enables you to analyze crime over time, not just as clusters.
  • Anyone in your organization can create their own custom search patterns, called Statistical Hunches, to set up specific criteria that control for time, location/ geography, and type of crime. You can also identify Threshold Hunchs if you prefer to receive notification based on event counts in a specific area.
  • Analysts in your organization can define Mass Hunches to watch for statistical variations using the same analysis filters over a wide area of your operational jurisdiction.
  • Because search criteria are custom, you can define the custom geographic area of your choice, enabling you to detect crime clusters that span different Police district boundaries or service areas. You are not limited to analyzing circular regions.
  • Statistical and Threshold Hunches can be shared and searched throughout an organization so that each individual does not need to set their own hunch criteria.
  • HunchLab provides a customizable Intelligence Dashboard that displays aggregate and summary statistics of information across data stores, allowing users to quickly access relevant charts, reports, and maps showing the geographic distribution of occurrences.
  • HunchLab works on your infrastructure, so your sensitive information never leaves your secure environment.
  • Role-based security controls the level of functionality exposed to different classes of users.
  • Alerts can be received through the latest web technologies so they can be accessed anywhere: email, RSS and GeoRSS feeds

Skinning and Branding of Your System

When HunchLab is installed at your organization, it is customized to use your data. Your crime classes and codes are brought into the system and appear as you are used to seeing them. Statistical and Threshold Hunches are designed to work with crime classifications you have already defined.

HunchLab is also populated with spatial areas of interest to you. Sectors, beats, and other jurisdictional areas are loaded into the system and are available for use in searches and Hunches.

The entire HunchLab interface, including buttons and icons, is customizable to match your organization’s branding using style sheet driven labels, graphics, banners, colors, typeface, and footers.
